San Beda caught fire in the third quarter before it weathered a late Emilio Aguinaldo College rally to score its second win, 85-81, in the NCAA Season 97 men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday, March 30 at the La Salle Greenhills Gym.

James Kwekuteye, who saw limited action in the first half due to two early fouls, came alive in the third frame to finish with 16 points, spiked by three triples and eight rebounds while JV Gallego unloaded 15 markers to carry the Red Lions in the tight contest in the first two quarters.
The close game didn’t really surprise San Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez as he believed the Generals were really a very competitive team to face.
“This team is a very dangerous team with Curteza and Taywan, I think we cannot underestimate this team. I salute coach Bunyi for preparing this team. They really came prepared against us, it’s just really executing our gameplan in the third quarter and I’m happy na nagstep-up naman yung mga players,” said the veteran coach.
San Beda created the separation in the third as Kwekuteye joined hands with rookie Rhayyan Amsali to energize a 14-2 blast that turned a 48-all deadlock into a 12-point lead, 62-50.
However, leading by 12 points with 1:40 left, San Beda had to endure a swift 7-0 spurt behind the efforts of Ralph Robin and Marwin Taywan as the pesky EAC squad inched closer, 83-78 with less than a minute left.
An Amsali basket that beat the 24-second shot clock buzzer proved to be the dagger to the hearts of the gallant Generals as it gave San Beda the much-needed seven-point cushion, 85-78, with 10 seconds remaining.
Refusing to give up, Robin nailed another triple with 5.1 ticks left for EAC but the possession arrow after a jump ball call went to San Beda, allowing the Season 95 runner-up to come away with the victory and join Letran Knights as early leaders in the standings with a 2-0 record.
Robin unloaded 19 points while JP Maguliano and Taywan added 15 and 13 points respectively which all went down the drain as EAC absorbed its second straight loss in the same number of games.
