With more than 40 days to go before the May, 2020 elections, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go urged candidates running for the 2022 national and local elections to focus on public service by putting the welfare of Filipinos first.
Go, who earlier withdrew his presidential bid for the upcoming polls, made the remark amid speculations that President Duterte might endorse a presidential candidate in the coming days.
“I cannot speak on behalf of the President until makapagsalita po ang ating Pangulo (...not until our President has spoken),” said Go during an interview after his visit to fire victims in Maharlika, Taguig City yesterday.
“Pero, hopefully po sana, in the next few days ay mayroon ho siyang maendorso pero desisyon niya po ‘yon (But, hopefully, he will make the endorsement in the next few days). Matagal na ho tayong nag-aantay (We have already waited for a long time),” he added.
While he cannot speak on behalf of the President, Go said that he himself has already declared his support for the candidates of his party, the PDP-Laban party, is formally endorsing.
The ruling party is endorsing the presidential and vice presidential bids of former Senator Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Davao city Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, respectively.
“Nabanggit na po ni Vice Mayor Baste (This was already mentioned by Vice Mayor Baste). Kami naman po sa PDP, pumirma na rin po ako, mayroon na hong iniendorso ang PDP (We in the PDP, I also signed, we have already endorsed a candidate),” he said.
“So antayin na lang po natin ang ating Pangulo kung ano po ‘yung kanyang personal na magiging desisyon sa mga susunod na araw (Let us just wait for the personal decision of the President in the coming days),” he added.
Go previously stated that he hopes for unity within the party when it comes to backing candidates in the next elections.
Meanwhile, Go remarked that the President is keen on backing a candidate who will continue the current administration’s successful programs and policies.
“Ang sinasabi niya, sana ay ipagpatuloy ang magagandang programa (What he was saying, he was hoping that his good programs will continue). Pero hindi naman natin masabi kung sino talaga 'yung gustong magpatuloy nitong magagandang programa (However, we cannot tell as to who really wants to continue these beautiful programs),” he said.
“Ako naman habang nag-usap kami, hopefully ‘yung magagandang programa na nakakatulong, 'yung Build Build Build program, mga free education, free irrigation, ito pong Malasakit Center, mga healthcare natin, ipagpatuloy niyo lang po (In my case, while we were talking, I said, hopefully, the beautiful programs, such as the Build Build Build program, free education, free irrigation, and this Malasakit Center, our healthcare will continue to be implemented by the next administration),” he added.
After expressing gratitude to all of the candidates for their desire to serve the country, Go urged them to put the welfare and interests of the Filipino people first if elected.
