Pacquiao urges senators with 'conflict of interest' to step out of poll-related probes
Presidential aspirant Senator Manny Pacquiao has supported the call for senators to inhibit themselves from elections-related investigations because their participation has "conflict of interest".
Pacquiao told reporters in an ambush interview during his Tuesday, March March 29 sortie in Quezon City that he is willing to restrain himself from participating in the Senate probe on the Smartmatic data breach controversy if he is asked by any party. He will do it to allay fears of bias, he added.
He also called on his colleagues to do the same.
On Monday, March 29, poll watchdog Kontra Daya urged Senator Imee Marcos to resign as the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Electoral Reforms due to her fraternal relationship with frontrunning presidential candidate, Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.
Kontra Daya convenor Danilo Arao said the lawmaker must step down from her post out of "delicadeza" because of possible "conflict of interest".
Pacquiao said there is nothing wrong with the group's request because even he "wants a clean and fair election".
"Dapat iyong mga tumatakbo na may conflict (of interest) hindi na dapat mag-attend (Those who are running in the elections that have conflict of interest must not attend the hearing)," he said.
