College of St. Benilde notched its first win in the NCAA Season 97 following its 79-68 triumph over Lyceum on Tuesday, March 29 at the La Salle Greenhills Gym.
Robi Nayve led the way for Benilde with 17 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the beyond the arc while Will Gozum, after scoring just two points in the first half, finished in double figures with 15 markers on top of eight boards.
The Blazers capitalized on the late errors of the Pirates to put the game away after a close contest in the first three quarters.
A huge Lyceum turnover with 3:51 left in the game gifted JC Cullar a layup that gave the CSB a nine-point cushion, 70-61. Gozum and Vincent Cunanan traded baskets in the ensuing plays as CSB kept a 73-65 lead with 1:44 remaining.
The Pirates had the chance to inch closer but they committed two crucial turnovers, with Cullar converting two free throws on the other end while Nayve hit a triple which stretched the lead to 79-65 with less than a minute left.
AJ Benson and Cullar were solid for the Blazers, chipping in 11 points apiece.
Enoch Valdez after scoring 20 points in his first game, topscored once again for the Pirates with 13 while Shawn Umali added 11.
CSB head coach Charles Tiu was glad to see his wards deliver in the crucial moments especially after the team collapsed in its first game against Letran where they surrendered an early 14-point lead.
“I thought our effort was better. Against Letran, we really fell short and I told them we have to learn from our mistakes there, a lot of it were mental mistakes and effort mistakes which we cannot have,” said the outspoken coach.
The Blazers improved to a 1-1 record while the Pirates remained winless in two games so far.
