New transformer to boost Iloilo City power utility capacity

ILOILO CITY—Power utility MORE Electric and Power Corp. (MORE Power) has successfully installed the newly-acquired transformer to its system in Iloilo City. The new transformer costs P50 million.

The 33 megavolt ampere (MVA) power transformer has now energized the new sub-station in City Proper district, and replaced the dilapidated transformer of Panay Electric Co. (PECO), the old power utility that MORE Power took over last February 2020.

It specifically replaced the decades-old 20-MVA power transformer of PECO that conked out last January.

MORE Power President Roel Castro said that energizing the 33-MVA power transformer is way ahead of its schedule, which is supposed to be the end of the year.

MORE Power decided to replace it sooner than scheduled since the City Proper district is where many local shops are located and where many offices of government agencies are located. Iloilo City is the regional capital of Western Visayas.

Castro added that a new transformer is also needed to boost power capacity with the expected surge in usage this summer season.

The new transformer was manufactured by Fortune Hitachi of Taiwan.

MORE Power tapped a subsidiary of Manila Electric Company (Meralco) in commissioning the new transformer.

Part of MORE Power’s modernization program, the new transformer is expected to increase system capacity of the City Power sub-station by at least eight percent.
