Maxine Esteban finishes seventh in Czech tourney

Maxine Esteban yielded to Slovakia’s Marta Cammilleti, 13-2, to settle for seventh place in the Sokol Cup U23 Senior Women’s Foil Competition in Brno, Czech Republic over the weekend.

Esteban finished with four wins in six matches in the group stage to make it to the knockout phase.

Her victories came at the expense of Sofie Karafiatova and Adela Kocourova of the Czech Republic, Florentine Rom of Austria and Karolina Csefalvayova of Slovakia and lost to Lai Ertun of Turkey and Luca Zsolnai of Hungary.

Esteban took a bye in the Round of 64 and eliminated Marcela Dajcic of Croatia, 15-6, then barged into the quarterfinals with a 15-11 victory over Gaia Cantucci of Slovakia.
