DOH reminds candidates, supporters to follow health protocols

The Department of Health (DOH) urged all election candidates as well as their supporters to strictly follow the health and safety protocols during campaign activities.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire reminded the public that the presence of Covid-19 still remains.

"Kami po ay nagpapaalala na nandito pa rin po ang virus. Nakikita na po nating pumuputok ang mga kaso sa iba’t ibang lugar sa buong mundo. Sana po hindi po tayo susunod na tumaas din ang kaso dito (We are reminding everyone that the virus is still here. We are already seeing increasing cases in various places around the world. I hope we don't experience an uptick in cases here) ," said Vergeire during a recent Malacanang press briefing.

"Everybody should maintain and comply with minimum public health standards. Huwag na huwag ninyo pong kakalimutan na magsuot ng mask kapag kayo ay pupunta sa mga campaign sorties (Don't forget to wear a mask when you go to campaign sorties)," she added.

She once again urged all candidates to set a good example to the public in terms of adhering to the minimum public health standards.

"Sa atin pong mga kandidato, sana po tayo po ay maging ehemplo ng ating mga kababayan. Tayo ang manguna at ipakita sa kanila na tumutupad tayo sa minimum public health standards at tayo po ay bakunado (For our candidates, I hope we serve as an example to our citizens. You should take the lead and show them that you are following the minimum public health standards and have been vaccinated)," said Vergeire.

"Lagi po nating tatandaan, dalawang kritikal na bagay ang makakalampas o makakatulong sa atin sa paglampas dito po sa pandemyang ito – these would be vaccination at saka ang pagsunod natin sa minimum public health standards (Bear in mind that there are two critical things that can help us overcome this pandemic - these would be vaccination and then our adherence to minimum public health standards)," she added.

Covid-19 cases in the Philippines continue to decline. Vergeire said that the country's average daily number of cases was at 454---which was slightly lower than the 490 cases per day last December or before the Omicron variant hit the Philippines.

The campaign period for national positions began last Feb. 8 while that for local candidates officially started last March 25. The campaign period will end on May 7.
