Barangay Ginebra San Miguel’s Scottie Thompson and Justin Brownlee have put themselves in strong consideration for the two individual awards that will be handed out in the PBA Governors’ Cup.

Thompson moved into second place in the Best Player of the Conference award while Brownlee jumped to third in the Best Import race after they led Ginebra to an upset of twice-to-beat TNT in the quarterfinals.

Behind his all-around effort against the Tropang Giga, Thompson improved his Statistical Points to 36.1, trailing only NorthPort’s Robert Bolick who ended his conference with 39.9.

Brownlee’s ability to produce big numbers in pressure-packed situations resulted in 51.6 Statistical Points but was behind San Miguel Beer’s Shabazz Muhammad with 53.5 and Meralco’s Tony Bishop at 52.2.

With Bolick, Phoenix Super LPG’s Matthew Wright, running third at 33.6, NorthPort’s Arwind Santos (33.5) and TNT rookie Mikey Williams (32.6) already on vacation, Thompson now has a clear path towards bagging his biggest individual award yet.

The former University of Perpetual Help previously won the Most Improved Player and the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals Most Valuable Player both in 2018.

Brownlee has won the Best Import once also in the 2018 Commissioner’s Cup, and the possibility of Ginebra reaching the finals with a 2-0 lead over NLEX in their semis series may boost his chances of getting another award.

But standing in his way are the imports in the other semifinal series between Meralco and Magnolia Pambansang Manok.

Aside from Bishop, another foreign player in contention is Magnolia’s Mike Harris, who sits in fifth at 51.0 SPs.
