CEBU CITY – It’s like scaling Mt. Apo.
That’s how former Tourism Secretary Ace Durano described his face-off with Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia in their battle for governorship of Cebu province.

But with less than two months before the elections, the former Cabinet member of the Arroyo administration is seeing a greater chance of pulling off a victory.
“In the past three to four months, nag sige ta og tungas but with the support of Vice Governor Davide and with our alliance with the Uniteam, ni gaan-gaan ang pag tungas “In the past three to four months, we have been working hard but with the support of Vice Governor Davide and with our alliance with the Uniteam, the climb has become easier),” said Durano.
Durano, who heads the Barug Alang sa Kauswagan Ug Demokrasya (BAKUD), and his running mate, incumbent Cebu vice governor Hilario “Junjun” Davide III, made the statement during their campaign sortie marking the official start of the campaign period for local candidates in the May 9 elections.
Durano and Davide joined their supporters in a Mass in Danao City, northern Cebu, which is the bailiwick of the Duranos, before their motorcade spearheaded towards the areas belonging to the fifth district of the province.
Davide said that aside from the northern part of Cebu, they are hopeful they will be able to get enough support from southern Cebu.
“Signs have been good. We are hopeful that we can also get the south,” said Davide, who hails from Argao town, Cebu.
Durano’s brother, Red, is facing Garcia’s son-in-law Duke Frasco, the incumbent Cebu Fifth District Representative.
“I am very optimistic that we can take back the fifth district. Seven out of 11 mayors are our allies. Majority of the councilors, barangay captains and vice mayors are also with us,” said Red, who used to be the congressman of the fifth district but lost to Frasco in the 2019 elections.
Meanwhile, the Garcia-led One Cebu held its own opening salvo in Barili town, one of the bailiwicks of the Garcias.
Present in the opening salvo were Garcia’s running mate, Dr. Maria Theresa Heyrosa and Cebu 3rd District Rep. Pablo John Garcia.
In his speech, Pablo John, secretary-general of One Cebu, asked the Cebuanos to go for the tried and tested, referring to his sister Gwen.
“As what a barangay captain told me, we need a tree that has been tested and blessed us with its fruits for a long time,” Pablo John said.
