'Like Rizal, Maria Makiling,' says Laguna vice gov of Inday Sara

For Laguna Vice Governor Karen Agapay, vice presidential candidate Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte has something in common with the likes of Dr. Jose Rizal and Maria Makiling.

Agapay was explaining on Thursday, March 24 the issuance of a Provincial Council declaring Duterte as adopted daughter of Laguna when she brought up the names of the historical and mythical figures.

On March 16, the council approved and issued Resolution No.321, S. 2022, which declared Duterte as the adopted daughter of the province.

"Ito po ‘yung resolution na pinagkaisahan po ng lalawigan ng Laguna sa pangunguna ng aming mahal na Gobernador Hernandez at isa pong resolution ng pagkilala sa ating minamahal na Mayor Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio bilang adopted daughter of Laguna (This is the resolution that was supported by the province of Laguna led by our beloved Governor Ramil Hernandez, and is a resolution recognizing our beloved Mayor Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio as adopted daughter of Laguna)," she said.

Referring to the presidential daughter, Agapay said: "Nasasalamin po kasi sa kanya ang katalinuhan at siyempre sigasig ng ating pambansang bayani Dr. Jose Rizal and of course, ang pagiging mahinhin at mapagkalinga gaya ni Maria Makiling (We see in her the intelligence and of course the enthusiasm of our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal and of course, the modest and caring nature of the likes of Maria Makiling)."

The revered Philippine revolutionary Rizal was born in Calamba, Rizal on June 19, 1861. His writings inspired Andres Bonifacio and others to take up arms against the Spanish colonists.

On the other hand, Maria Makiling is the guardian spirit of Laguna's Mount Makiling, says its Wikipedia entry.

The most widely known diwata in Philippine mythology, she is said to be responsible for protecting the mountain's bounty and is thus also "a benefactor for the townspeople who depend on the mountain's resources".

Duterte, in a chance interview with reporters who covered her campaign sorties in Laguna Thursday, said she feels honored by the council's gesture.

"Nagpapasalamat po ako sa provincial government ng Laguna sa kanila pong pag-declare (I thank the provincial government of Laguna for their declaration of me) as an adopted daughter of Laguna and it's an honor," the UniTeam vice presidential bet said.
