HD Spikers down Troopers, sweep group stage

Cignal survived the 21-point explosion of Royse Tubino for Black Mamba Army to prevail 25-20, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19, Thursday and sweep the group stage eliminations in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference at the Paco Arena in Manila.

The HD Spikers turned to cohesion in outplaying Tubino and the Troopers for their fourth straight win in as many outings.

The feat earned Cignal the top seeding in Pool A and set up a quarterfinals duel with the fourth-seeded team in Pool B. They also earned a twice-to-beat advantage.

Ria Meneses, Rachel Daquis, Ces Molina and Roselyn Doria scored in double figures and teamed up for Cignal’s demolition of Army. Meneses and Daquis scored 15 and 13 points, while Molina and Doria added 12 and 10 points.

Gel Cayuna also shone with 41 excellent sets on top of three points.

Army finished the elims with a 0-4 mark, kissing its title campaign goodbye.
