Magnitude 5.1 quake hits Cagayan — Phivolcs

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake shook Cagayan province at around 8:02 p.m., Wednesday, March 23, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs traced the epicenter of the earthquake at 46 kilometers (km) northeast of Camiguin Island, Calayan, Cagayan.

It was shallow at a depth of 20 km.

Phivolcs initially measured the earthquake at magnitude 5.4 but later revised it to 5.1.

Its instruments measured the earthquake at Intensity III in Gonzaga, Cagayan; Intensity II in Claveria, Cagayan and Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte; and Intensity I in Laoag City.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic in origin, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

It advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur due to this earthquake.
