PAGASA replaces names of 3 destructive cyclones in 2021

Jacinto, Mirasol, and Opong will replace the names of 2021’s destructive cyclones Jolina, Maring, and Odette, respectively, based on a list released by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The State weather bureau will start using these name replacements in 2025.

PAGASA has practiced the decommissioning of “extraordinarily destructive storms” since February 1979.

It replaces a tropical cyclone name once the cost of damage to agriculture and infrastructure reaches P1 billion and/or claimed at least three hundred lives.

Jolina (Conson) struck Visayas and Southern Luzon in September 2021, while Maring (Kompasu) hit northern Luzon in October 2021.

Meanwhile, Odette battered Mindanao, Visayas, and parts of Palawan in December 2021.

PAGASA has four regular sets of names for tropical cyclones within the Philippine area of responsibility. These lists are rotated every four years.

The first tropical cyclone of the year starts with the name beginning in letter A and so on down the list as one disturbance succeeds another.

Meanwhile, if the number of tropical cyclones within the year exceeds 25, the auxiliary list will be used.
