Mandaluyong LGU launches free chest x-ray for employees against TB

In the observance of World Tuberculosis Day on March 24, the Mandaluyong City local government launched on Tuesday, March 22, its free chest x-ray service to its employees in support of the Department of Health's (DOH) campaign to fight tuberculosis (TB).

According to the local government unit (LGU), the free chest x-ray examination will last until March 24 at the city hall grounds.

Mandaluyong City Mayor Menchie Abalos said that while the free chest x-ray examination is not mandatory, she is encouraging employees to avail of it.

"I know how hard and expensive tuberculosis treatment is because my own children got them when they were young through one of our drivers," Abalos said.

She added that even when a person is diagnosed with tuberculosis, he or she shouldn't be afraid because it is curable and medicine is available in health centers for free.

Dr. Ronilo Robles Jr., medical coordinator of the National Tuberculosis Control Program (NTCP), said that he aims to help Mandaluyong City in increasing its TB detection capacity, with the help of the private sector, through free chest X-ray examinations.

Robles explained that a person with TB can pass the disease to 10 other people a day.

He added that people should not discriminate against those who have the disease and patients should not feel discouraged since there are available medical treatments for TB.

"Despite the techonological advances in medicine, we, as doctors still see social stigma as one reason why people don't want to undergo tuberculosis examination even if it's for free. This is why part of our campaign to fight tuberculosis is providing the right information about the disease through seminars and training," Robles said.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), respiratory tuberculosis ranks 12th in its list of leading causes of death in the Philippines last year.
