Third Sunday of Lent: Faithful urged to reflect on choosing the right candidates in the May polls

As Christendom marks the Third Sunday of Lent today, March 20, Diocese of Iba, Zambales Bishop Bartolome Santos called on the faithful to include in their reflections the important task of choosing the right candidates in the coming elections.

Lent, the bishops said, is an opportune time to fully reflect on choosing the right leaders for the country who will work for the common good. Voters must look to the example of God who offered His own Son Jesus for the salvation of all, he said.

"As we observe the Lenten season, let us reflect and consider the future of our country. What direction are we taking? It should be the one that leads to God, the one that will benefit the majority. God gave us His only Son Jesus Christ for the salvation of all. Let us choose candidates who will work for the good of all,” Bishop Santos said over Radio Veritas.

The Church leader stressed Filipino Christians are not ordinary voters but are followers of God who adhere to His teachings.

"Let us follow the will of God as we choose the next leaders for our country. Let us use this time to reflect on the importance of our choices,” he added.

Meanwhile, as Catholics mark the Third Sunday of Lent, the Church continues to call on the faithful “to examine their conscience, to pray more, and be repentant for sins committed.”

Confessional services in many churches are available while at the same time, strictly implementing the health protocols. The faithful are reminded to refrain from touching, kissing, and wiping the images inside the church as a safety measure against Covid-19.
