Nesthy Petecio found renewed strength as she continues to hunt for the country's first Olympic gold medal in boxing.

"Lagi kong sinasabi 'yong walang hihinto hangga't walang ginto (I said it once and will say it again, we won't stop until I get that gold)," said Petecio in her speech during the 2022 Philippine Sportswriters Association Awards night at the Diamond Hotel in Manila last March 14.
"Kahit ilang ulit po akong nakakaramdam... after Olympics, tinanong ko sarili ko kung gusto ko pa ba 'to, kung gusto ko pa ba ipagpatuloy 'yong boxing kasi nandoo na ko sa moment na 'enough na siguro 'tong narating ko (No matter how many times I feel like backing out... After the Olympics, I'd ask myself if I should still continue boxing and took into consideration that perhaps 'enough is enough).'
"Pero hindi. May isang other side ko na hindi pa. Hindi pa tapos 'yong laban kasi wala ka pang ginto (But my other side would say no. I will fight until I win the gold)," said Petecio, who bagged silver medal in the featherweight division of women's boxing in the Tokyo Games.
One of her biggest inspirations? No less than Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz herself.
Petecio recalled that Diaz's success story en route to the country's historic and first gold medal prompted her to pursue another Olympic run.
In the 2020 Tokyo Games, Petecio powered through the featherweight final but fell short at the hands of Japanese foe Sena Irie via 5-0 unanimous decision.
Taking inspiration from Diaz, Petecio wanted to repeat what the elite weightlifter did -- from taking home the silver medal in the 2016 Rio Games to winning the gold in the Tokyo Olympics.
"Si champ Hidi talaga 'yong inspirasyon ko ngayon. 'Yong nag-silver siya sa Rio at kayang kunin 'yong ginto, bakit 'di ko subukan 'yon? (Champ Hidilyn is my inspiration. When she won the silver in Rio and showed that she can still compete and win the gold, why not try it out myself?" said Petecio, also the 2019 AIBA World Champion.
The 29-year-old Davao del Sur native boxer, however, will start from ground zero and kick off her 2022 campaign beginning with the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam.
