'Jewel in the Palace' star Lee Young-ae donates to Ukraine
Korean actress Lee Young-ae, who rose to global popularity after starring in the hit K-drama “Jewel in the Palace,” has donated money to Ukraine, which is now being attacked by Russia.
Ukraine Ambassador to Korea, Dmytro Ponomarenko, posted her donation amounting to 100 million won ($83,000) on Twitter and thanked her for the kind deed.

“We are very excited and touched by the letter and the great financial contribution of the famous Korean actress Lee Young-Ae in support of Ukraine and the demand to end the war as soon as possible! The donations will be transferred to the needs of victims of aggression,” said Ponomarenko tweeted.
He also uploaded the letter of the 51-year-old actress.
"As a family of veterans who have experienced war, I sympathize with the horrors of the current situation more than anyone else," said Lee Young-ae, who also starred in films like “Bring Me Home” and “Lady Vengeance,” and the drama “Saimdang, Memoir of Colors.”
Lee Young-ae added, "I dearly hope the war in Ukraine comes to an end soon and pray for everyone's well-being and safety. To all the Ukrainian citizens who are calling for freedom and peace, I hope you do not lose your courage and hope,” according to Korea JoongAng Daily.
“As a citizen of Korea who is also for peace and freedom, I would like to convey my heart through this small gift. May God always be with you," she said.
According to Ukraine’s official website, Russia invaded Ukraine starting at about 5 a.m. on Feb. 24.
“Horrific Russian rocket strikes on Kyiv. Last time the Ukrainian capital experienced anything like this was 1941 when it was attacked by Nazi Germany,” the official Ukraine Facebook page posted on Feb. 26.
World leaders have condemned Russia and President Vladimir Putin for invading Ukraine.
Igor Zhdanov, the Minister of Youth and sports in Ukraine, as of March 1, the number of civilians killed by Russia’s invasion totaled 366 including 16 children with 45 wounded, Interfax Ukraine reported.
The total losses of Russia, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces, are: deaths - 5,710 personnel; prisoners - 200; destroyed and damaged aircraft - 29 units, helicopters - 29 units, tanks - 198, BBM - 846, artillery systems - 77, air defense - 7, MLRS - 24, fuel tanks - 60, UAV operational and tactical level - 3 , boats - 2 units and motor vehicles - 305, the report stated.
