DOST chief hopes next admin will focus on research, development

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Fortunato "Boy" de la Peña is hoping the next administration would commercialize and utilize the results of government-funded research and development (R&D).

"Iyan ang kailangan para makatulong ang science and technology sa pag-solve ng ating pressing national and local problems at para makabangon tayo sa hirap tungo sa mabilis na pag-unlad (That's what is needed for science and technology to help solve our pressing national and local problems and for us to rise above the difficulties towards rapid development). Science for the people," de la Peña told Manila Bulletin.

De la Peña added that the next administration should also focus on the active participation of Niche Centers in the Regions (NICER) in solving problems and creating wealth.

Through NICER, qualified higher education institutions (HEIs) in the regions are provided with grants to allow them to undertake quality research directed at promoting regional development with their existing capabilities and resources.

Through DOST's Balik Scientist Program, Filipino scientists, technologists, and experts are encouraged to return to the country and share their expertise to promote scientific, agro-industrial, and economic development.

De la Peña also hopes the next administration could increase clients and partners from industry for projects under DOST Research and Development Institutes (RDIs), as well as maximizing DOST's contributions to disaster risk reduction.
