Iloilo eyes 4-day work week

ILOILO CITY – The city government of Iloilo and the provincial government of Iloilo are eyeing to implement the four-day work week as suggested by Secretary Karl Chua Karl Chua to cushion the impact of the seemingly ever increasing prices of fuels.

“In order to help our employees cope with the present increases of fuel, the city will start adopting the four-day work week as suggested by NEDA chief Karl Chua starting the week after next,” said Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas in a statement.

“This will give our employees time to adjust their schedules both in work and in their homes,” added Mayor Treñas.

“This is nothing new. I am open to it. In fact, we did this before and the reason was not fuel increase, but the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. of Iloilo province.

Defensor said that in one of the executive orders he issued in July 2021, there was already a four-day work day for employees wherein they worked 10 hours per day.

But there was a system in place that offices at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol are still open from Monday to Friday. However, every office at that time was assigned with a day in the week during which employees were not required to physically report.

Defensor is eyeing to revive that instead of closing offices for public transactions on Friday.
