Binay to prioritize preventive health care

Former vice president and senatorial aspirant Jejomar Binay emphasized on Friday, March 18, the importance of bringing preventive health care closer to the people, especially in the provinces.

Binay made the statement following a Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) report about the leading causes of deaths in the country in 2021.

According to the report, ischemic heart diseases are the leading cause of death from January to October 2021, with 110,332 cases or 18.3 per cent of total deaths in the country. This is an increase of about 28 percent from the 86,164 deaths recorded in the same period in 2020.

Other top causes of deaths in 2021 were cerebrovascular diseases, deaths due to COVID-19 virus, neoplasms or commonly known as cancer, and diabetes mellitus.

“Dapat maging prayoridad ang tinatawag na preventive health care. Ito ay mga paraan para maiwasan ang pagkakasakit (Preventive health care must be prioritized. These are the ways to prevent sickness). This would, in turn, help reduce the strain on the public health system placed by expenditures on treating debilitating and even life-threatening diseases,” Binay said.

He explained that preventive health measures include mass immunization or vaccination, nutrition, promoting healthy lifestyles, proper sanitation, community-based health programs, and traditional medicine.

“Most illnesses are preventable. Government should give emphasis on preventing illnesses, since the state of the people’s health also has an impact on the economy,” Binay said.

“Pundasyon ng masiglang ekonomiya ang malulusog na mamamayan. Kapag ako po ay nahalal sa Senado, isa po sa ating magiging prayoridad ang kalusugan ng bawat Pilipino (A healthy community is the foundation of a booming economy. Once I'm elected at the Senate, the health of every Filipino will be one of my priorities),” he added.

The former Vice President stressed that every Filipino has the right to receive medical services and it is the government's obligation to do so.
