Pangilinan bats for more agri interventions in Basilan to achieve peace, economic growth
Successful agriculture interventions are key to attaining peace and stability in Mindanao, especifically in Basilan, aspiring vice president Senator Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan said.

"Pretty much, dito sa (here in) Mindanao, yung mga areas na mayroong successful agri interventions, walang bakbakan. Walang giyera (areas that have successful agricultural interventions have no battles. No wars)," Pangilinan said on Thursday, March 17.
The senator stressed that the "key solution" to Mindanao's peace and order is the successful development of Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), saying that the full support and commitments on peace negotiations of the national government to BARMM must be ensured.
"Suportahan yung (Support) economic growth, suportahan ang (support) agriculture, bigyan ng hanapbuhay ang ating mga kababayan dito. Mawawala na ang giyera (provide jobs. War will eventually end)," he said.
Recognizing that the potential of the island province is "huge," Pangilinan also underscored that building road infrastructures and providing facilities for fishing and farming communities are the initiatives that must be carried out in order to unleash the economic potentials of Basilan.
The aspiring vice president cited Basilan's seafood products as among the potentials of the province, which only lacks post-harvest facilities.
"Pagka mayroong (If there is) post-harvest facility, mga (such as) solar cold-storage facilities, eh talagang dadami ang ani at huli ng mga isda at mas magiging (harvest and earning will improve and will be more) available. Tataas ang kita ng ating mga mangingsda dito (Fisherfolks here will earn more)," Pangilinan said.
"The economy will boom if we do interventions in fishing and of course in agriculture," he added.
The lawmaker also pointed out that infrastructures have greatly helped in the development of Mindanao and that it must be sustained.
The infrastructure development in Basilan has resulted in peace and order, especially in Isabela City which used to be a "kidnapping capital" 10 years ago, he said.
"Talagang ang laking difference lalo na sa peace and order. Dati talagang kaliwa’t kanan ang kidnapping. Malaking bagay yung mga proyekto ng infrastructure na nagkaroon na ng circumferential road dito sa Basilan na bukas itong mga areas, mga enclaves (The difference is really huge, especially in peace and order. Kidnapping incidents are happening left and right before. Infrastructure projects are a huge help including a circumferential road in Basilan to open areas, enclaves)," Pangilinan said.
"Mas maganda ngayon compared to 10 years ago. Kausap ko rin ‘yung mga locals. (It's better now compared to 10 years ago. I was also talking to the locals). They attest to the same. Talagang iba na ang sitwasyon ngayon (The situation is really different now) compared to 10 years ago," Pangilinan added.
Pangilinan barnstormed Basilan with runningmate presidential candidate Vice President Leni Robredo and other senatorial bets Thursday.
