2022 Palace race not about settling old score with Robredo--Marcos

Presidential candidate Bongbong Marcos said the upcoming May 9 polls will be about securing a good future for Filipinos, and not about settling his old score with his rival, Vice President Leni Robredo.

"This election is going to decide the future of our country, not some political issue," Marcos said during his virtual guesting at the Kapihan sa Manila Bay news forum on Wednesday, March 16.

Marcos was referring to his very close loss against Robredo in the 2016 vice presidential race. He has a longstanding protest on the result.

Before these remarks, the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) standard-bearer and UniTeam member was asked if he left the presidential race this year would be a referendum of the 2016 contest, since Liberal Party (LP) stalwart Robredo is also eyeing the Palace seat this May.

"Absolutely not. One thing has nothing to do with the other," Marcos said in a very dismissive tone.

"This election might be the most important election in our lifetimes, all of us. Because there has been a tectonic shift in the way the world works after the pandemic," he said.

"This election will decide how we approach and how we position ourselves to get the best out of that tectonic shift or mitigate the problems of that tectonic shift or how to take full advantage or how to adjust properly to the changes that we're seeing. That's what this election is about for me," Marcos said.

The results of a Pulse Asia survey conducted from Feb. 18 to 23 saw Marcos (60 percent preference rate) post a huge lead over the second-placed Robredo (15 percent).
