What 'Ms. Marvel' trailer tells us about Kamala Khan's superpower

In the comics, the young Pakistani-American heroine is known for her shapeshifting ability

A new superhero is about to grace the world’s screens as Disney and Marvel Studios unveil the principal trailer of the forthcoming series “Ms. Marvel,” presenting the studios’ first Muslim superhero.

Based on the 2013 Marvel Comics, the show centers its plot on Pakistani-American teenager Kamala Khan, brought to life by acting newbie Iman Vellani. As depicted on its teaser, Kamala is a girl from New Jersey who idolizes superheroes, most notably, Carol Danvers, a.k.a Captain America. Described as a “great student, an avid gamer, and a voracious fan-fiction scribe,” the 16-year-old girl often daydreams of what her life would be like if she is a superhero as she finds it hard to fit in at school and at home. Well, that fantasy comes to an end when she clasps on a bracelet, a family heirloom in the comics, giving her superhuman abilities.

In the comics, Kamala is known for her shapeshifting skills, from changing her height to elongating her limbs and enlarging her first to throw one hell of a punch. But in the trailer, the young heroine seems to have powers that mimic Carol’s, even defining the feeling as “cosmic.” She is also seen walking in midair through energy and wielding a powerful forcefield.

Although there is more to still uncover about this new superhero, we have to sit and wait for the coming “Ms. Marvel,” which is slated to premiere on Disney+ on June 8.
