No tsunami threat after a 7.3-magnitude quake hit Japan — Phivolcs

There is no tsunami threat to the Philippines following the 7.3-magnitude earthquake near the eastern coast of Honshu, Japan, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Wednesday evening, March 16.

Phivolcs said the earthquake struck at around 10:36 p.m. (Philippine time) and was shallow at a depth of 34 kilometers (km).

“Hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km of the earthquake epicenter. This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” it said.

The Japan Meteorological Agency immediately issued a tsunami advisory following the powerful earthquake as sea surge up to a meter may reach parts of Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures.
