Sotto favors P1,000 daily wage for private sector workers

Senate President Vicente C. Sotto III is pushing for an almost double increase in the daily minimum wage of private sector workers amid the continuous surge of prices of petroleum products.

In an interview during the Lacson-Sotto tandem campaign sortie in Tuguegarao City, Sotto said the daily minimum wage in Metro Manila should be pegged at P1,000 so that workers could cope with the price increases of basic products triggered by the rise in oil prices.

“If it were up to me, in these trying times, dapat ang minimum wage is (the minimum wage should be) P1,000,” vice presidential candidate said.

Sotto made the pitch after the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP), the country’s largest group of labor federations, filed a formal petition on Monday before the Regional Tripartite Wage and Productivity Board for a P470 increase in the minimum wage of workers in the National Capital Region (NCR).

The current minimum wage in Metro Manila is P537. If approved, the minimum daily wage will be P1,007.

The National Wage and Productivity Commission’s records showed Metro Manila’s minimum wage was last increased on October 30, 2018.

The TUCP made the appeal a day before the prices of petroleum products increased anew– P12.20 to P12.30 per liter for diesel, and P6.80 to P7.10 per liter for gasoline.

Sotto said a P1,000 daily minimum wage for Metro Manila workers could help workers adjust to the adverse impact of oil price increases brought about by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Presidential candidate Senator Panfilo M. Lacson said the minimum wage would be best decided upon by the regional wage boards due to the peculiarity in the cost of living per region.

“Hindi natin dapat tignan in terms of real wages. TIgnan natin ang living wage kasi doon nagma-matter kung sino ang nangangailangan at sino ang hindi (We must not look at it in terms of real wages. Let us look at the living wage per a region because it matters how much wage increase is needed),” Lacson added.
