BBM Vlog deep-dive: Bongbong says this N-word can help solve PH energy woes

Presidential candidate Bongbong Marcos has been using vlogs to reach as wide an audience as possible ahead of the May 9, 2022 elections. With now over 200 of these vlogs posted on his YouTube channel, a scouring of noteworthy snippets in these videos is in order.

In BBM Vlog no.202, Marcos discusses a certain N-word that could help the Philippines achieve dreams of moving away from fossil fuels and even become a major player in the renewable energy (RE) sector.

No, it's not "nuclear", as in nuclear power. Rather, it's "nickel".

The former senator highlighted in his video his intention to develop projects on RE sources such as solar and wind, and how the abundance of nickel in the Philippines can help unleash its RE potential.

"Ang isa pang teknolohiyang ating paglalaanan ng pansin ay ang mga tinatawag na large-scale battery storage. Ang nagiging problema dati sa solar ar wind power ay ang intermittence of production. Ibig sabihin, hindi laging umiihip ang hangin at hindi naman laging may araw (Another technology that we will focus on is large-scale battery storage. The intermittence of production has hampered solar and wind power in the past. That means there are times that there are neither wind nor sunlight)," Marcos noted.

"Pero iba na ngayon dahil napakaganda na ng teknolohiya sa large-scale battery storage. Ibig sabihin, may paglalagyan na ang nakokolektang power na hindi nagagamit ma gagamitin na lang kapag kinakailangan (But the technology for large-scale battery has vastly improved. That means there is now a way to save unused power so they may be used later)," he explained.

"Napakalaki ng potential din na maging bahagi ang Pilipinas sa global battery manufacturing industry dahil ang isa sa pinakaimportanteng metal na kailangan sa sa baterya ns mayaman ang Pilipinas ay yung nickel (There is also a huge potential for the Philippines to become part of the global battery manufacturing industry thanks to the abundance here of nickel, which is an important metal in the production of battery)," the Ilocano candidate said.

Nickel, Marcos said, is the natural resource should be maximized in order to ensure the Philippines' participation in the global rise of large-scale battery storage.

"Ang ating geographical location, ang ating natural resources, ang ating physical assets katambal ng teknolohiya, lahat ito ay nagsasabing hindi tayo dapat mawawalan o magkulang ng enerhiya. Kaya't aralin natin at gamitin natin (Our geographical location, natural resources, and physical assets--coupled with technology--all of these say that we shouldn't be having difficulties with energy. That's why we should study it and use it)," he added.

Marcos said the high cost of electricity is among the common complaints that he hears from constituents during his campaign sorties ahead of the May 2022 polls.
