6.4-magnitude quake in Occidental Mindoro triggers over 180 aftershocks -- Phivolcs

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) so far recorded 187 aftershocks following the 6.4-magnitude earthquake in Lubang, Occidental Mindoro on Monday morning, March 14.

As of 3 p.m., Phivolcs said that of the 187 aftershocks recorded, 54 were plotted or located close to the epicenter of the mainshock in Lubang, Occidental Mindoro.

The 6.4-magnitude earthquake occurred at around 5:05 a.m., Monday. Its epicenter was traced 110 kilometers (km) northwest of Lubang Island at a shallow depth of 28 km.

Phivolcs said the quake was "moderately strong" at Intensity IV in Lubang, Occidental Mindoro.

Meanwhile, it was felt as a "weak" tremor at Intensity III in Nasugbu, Batangas; Tagaytay City, Amadeo, Maragondon, Mendez, and Alfonso in Cavite; Quezon City; Taguig City; Mandaluyong City; Makati City; Navotas City; Pasig City; and Plaridel, Bulacan.

It was also felt as a "slightly weak" shaking at Intensity II in Talisay, Batangas; Palauig, San Felipe, and Castillejos in Zambales; and Malabon City; while it was "scarcely perceptible at Intensity I in Parañaque City.

Phivolcs' instruments also recorded the quake at Intensity III in Calumpit, Bulacan; Guagua, Pampanga; Olongapo City; Carmona and Tagaytay City, Cavite; Calapan, Oriental Mindoro, and Navotas City.

It was also recorded at Intensity II in Las Piñas City; Marikina City; Muntinlupa City; Quezon City; Pasig City; Baler, Aurora; City of Malolos, Marilao, Pandi, Plaridel, San Ildefonso, and San Rafael, Bulacan; Gapan City, and Palayan City in Nueva Ecija; Iba, Zambales; Batangas City and Talisay, Batangas; Dolores and Gumaca, Quezon; and Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro.

It was detected at Intensity I in Parañaque City; Pateros; Dagupan City, Doña Remedios Trinidad, Bulacan; Cabanatuan City and San Jose City in Nueva Ecija; Magalang, Pampanga; Tarlac City; Los Baños, Laguna; Infanta, Lucban, Mauban, Mulanay and Polillo, Quezon; San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Roxas, Oriental Mindoro; Puerto Princesa City; and San Juan City.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic in origin, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

It advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may still occur due to this earthquake.
