Farmers demand removal of taxes on oil amid price hike

Peasant group Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) urged President Rodrigo Duterte to issue an Executive Order (EO), directing the removal of taxes on major oil products amid the price hike.

KMP and Anakpawis Partylist leader Rafael Mariano, in a press statement on Thursday, March 10, said that the temporary removal of excise tax and value-added tax (VAT) on major oil products will “immediately lower” the retail prices of oil.

“ give a much-needed economic relief for consumers who are badly hurting from the damaging effects of unreasonably high fuel prices,” said Mariano.

KMP previously stated that farmers are directly affected by the “never-ending” oil price hikes, reiterating that they use gasoline to operate their agricultural machinery such as hand tractors and threshers.

“Local oil prices could reach up to P100 per liter in no time if price hikes remain unabated. This dire situation warrants an EO and decisive measures from the government to cushion the impact of price hikes,” Mariano reiterated.
