'VP-like' Sara says gov't should prepare for Russia-Ukraine war effects

Sounding more like the vice president that she aspires to be, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has called on the government to prepare for whatever impact the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war could have on Filipinos.

“With regard to the effects of the war, that is something that the national government should prepare for," Duterte-Carpio, chairman of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD), said during press conference in Davao City on Monday night, Feb. 28.

"Hindi sikreto kung ano ang epekto ng war. Nakita na natin sa mga nakaraang taon kung ano 'yung epekto, global effect ng giyera (The effects of war is no secret. We've seen in past years what the global effects of war are)," said the vice presidential candidate.

Last week, Russia invaded neighboring Ukraine in what most nations in the west have described as an unprovoked, despicable act.

Other countries are bracing for the economic impact of the hostilities, as Russia and Ukraine are major producers of oil and wheat, respectively.

"It is something that the national government, the whole of government should prepare for and not just one Cabinet secretary or one department of the government, dahil meron ng domino effect 'yan lahat sa lahat ng aspeto ng buhay ng mga Pilipino (this will have a domino effect on all aspects of the lives of Filipinos), particularly that will really affect our cost of living and our daily life dahil makaka-apekto siya sa ating finances (because that will affect our finances),” the lady mayor explained.

Duterte-Carpio is the running mate of Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) standard-bearer Bongbong Marcos. The two comprise the so-called UniTeam.

The Philippines has joined other nations in condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
