Solon wary PH might fall victim to territorial aggression 'someday'

Noting that he Philippines might one day be the victim of "territorial aggression", Muntinlupa lone district Rep. Ruffy Biazon backed on Tuesday, March 1 the United Nations' (UN) call for a stoppage to the hostilities in Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"I support the statement issued by the Philippines on the matter of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, particularly its call for the cessation of hostilities and the preservation of civilians and civilian infrastructures, especially those that are part of Ukraine’s culture and heritage," Biazon said in a statement.

"They are, after all, not just for the Ukranians but for humanity as well," noted the solon, who is a vice chairman of the House Committee on National Defense and Security.

Last week, Russia invaded neighboring Ukraine in what most nations from the west have described as an unprovoked, despicable act.

This has prompted the UN General Assembly (UNGA) to hold an emergency special session Tuesday (Philippine time) in order for the world body to address the matter and prevent a bloodbath of Ukrainians.

"The Philippines should stand by its commitment to the UN in upholding the sovereignty of States as well as their political independence and territorial integrity," Biazon said.

"We must remember that the Philippines may someday avail the support or assistance of the community of nations if we fall victim to territorial aggression by other countries," he added.

Earlier, Biazon's former colleague in the 18th Congress and current AP Party-list nominee Ronnie Ong said that the Philippines was "similarly situated with Ukraine" because of its ongoing territorial dispute with another military giant–China.

“Itong pangyayari sa Ukraine ay isang eye-opener dahil ipinapakita nito na di tayo maaaring umasa sa ibang bansa at sa mga alyansa. Kailangang tayo mismo ang gumawa ng mga hakbang upang tuloy-tuloy ang kapayapan (The occurrence in Ukraine is an eye-opener because it shows that we shouldn’t rely on other countries or alliances. We must take steps to preserve peace ourselves),” Ong said.
