Phoenix Super LPG is changing its import for the third time in the PBA Governors’ Cup after tapping Du’vaughn Maxwell ahead of the crucial match against Alaska on Thursday, March 3.
Team manager Paolo Bugia said the 30-year-old Maxwell is due to arrive Tuesday to take the place of Dominique Sutton, who was given the pink slip after playing four games for the Fuel Masters.
Maxwell is the team’s third reinforcement this conference as it tries to get out of a three-game skid that dropped Phoenix’s spot from third to eighth with a 4-5 record.
Currently on a three-game slide, Phoenix is in dire need of winning its remaining two matches in the eliminations.
The 30-year-old played for Hampton University in the US NCAA before suiting up for teams in Canada, Argentina, France and Ukraine.
His Ukraine stint with the Cherkasy Monkeys ended in late-January, weeks before the country went into turmoil due to the ongoing invasion by Russian forces.
Sutton lasted just two weeks with the Fuel Masters after being tapped to fill up the void left by Paul Harris, who put up strong numbers in the first five games of the conference before going down with a hamstring injury during a Christmas Day win against NLEX.
The erstwhile Air21 and GlobalPort import averaged 16.3 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals but struggled during his short stay, especially against San Miguel Beer and NorthPort.
It was in both games that Sutton was outplayed by SMB’s Vic Manuel after the two engaged before enduring the defense of NorthPort’s Arwind Santos in both games held last week at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
