"We receive the ashes because the call to repentance is addressed to us by Christ through the Church and it is also through the ministry of the Church that we are reconciled with God and each other," Fr. Carmelo Arada, the vice chancellor of the archdiocese, said.

He encouraged the faithful to participate in the community celebration of Ash Wednesday.

"The imposition of ashes is always done in the context of a liturgical celebration. It derives its meaning from the proclamation of the Word and prayers," Arada said.

For those who will find it difficult or impossible to go to church for the celebration, he said, they may use the Family Celebration of Ash Wednesday at Home prepared by the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission.

"Blessed ashes may be requested from our parishes for this purpose or the provision for the burning of palms/leaves at home may be used," said Arada.

He added that Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion may also be requested to visit the sick and the elderly for the imposition of ashes.

Catholics will mark on March 2 the start of the Lenten season with Ash Wednesday.
