Some expansion schools start with face-to-face classes, including other grade levels --- DepEd official

After allowing more grade levels to join the progressive expansion of face-to-face classes, an official of the Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday, Feb. 9, said that some of the schools that reopened in Metro Manila also welcomed back learners from other grade levels.

DepEd Human Resource and Organizational Development Officer-in-Charge (OIC) and DepEd-National Capital Region (NCR) Director Wilfredo Cabral told the Manila Bulletin that “two pilot schools in Quezon City” expanded the face-to-face classes to other grade levels.

In Tandang Sora Integrated School, Caloocan --- which was one of the identified expansion schools --- Cabral said that face-to-face classes now included Grades 7 to 10 learners.

Cabral said that 39 schools resumed face-to-face classes in Metro Manila on Wednesday that included the 28 original pilot schools.

In the progressive expansion phase of face-to-face classes, DepEd has authorized schools to include other grade levels in both public and private schools.

“With the expansion phase, we would like to give that opportunity and chance to the other grade levels,” said DepEd Assistant Secretary Malcolm Garma in a virtual presser last week.

Through this, DepEd hopes that there will be a “setting of the consciousness among our learners and teachers” that the learning and teaching process will depend on the home and school setup.

While the inclusion of more grade levels has been allowed, Garma said that this should still be based on the “capacity of the participating qualified schools” to ensure adherence to health and safety protocols.

During the pilot run held from November to December last year, DepEd initially included Kindergarten, Grades 1 to 3, and Senior High School to participate in the pilot implementation of in-person learning

Garma explained that “it’s really up to the schools, our divisions, and regions to make that right programming, the right combination of what grade levels can be included in the expanded limited face-to-face.”

Based on the “Interim Guidelines on the Expansion of Limited Face-to-Face Classes” issued by DepEd, expansion schools must pass the standards of the School Safety Assessment Tool (SSAT).

The expansion schools should also be in areas under Alert Levels 1 and 2; obtain the concurrence of LGUs and written consent of participants’ parents; and coordinate with respective barangays for the implementation of limited face-to-face classes.
