After being snubbed, the former ‘Twilight’ star finally gets a top nod
No longer a moody girl in love with a vampire, Kristen Stewart proves she has the acting chops to become a premier actress. A testament to that is her first nomination for the Best Actress category at the 94th annual Academy Awards. This recognition comes after her performance as the late Diana, Princess of Wales, on the biopic “Spencer” has been snubbed by the BAFTA committee and SAG Awards.

“I am speechless and humbled this morning,” the actress told ET. “I am bowled over by this. I never thought in a thousand years I’d be in the company of these four incredible women. I would pay to make movies. I would make them if it was illegal. This is dream state, to share on this level.”
Joining her in the category are Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”), Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”), Penelope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”), and Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”).
During the height of the Toronto International Film Festival in 2021, Manila Bulletin Arts and Culture columnist Rica Arevalo got a chance to chat with the actress during its “In Conversation with Kristen Stewart” virtual event. There the actress shared how she has become mature in choosing roles to play.
“I’m just more interested in films that reflect that inner life versus plot-heavy pedantic. Here’s what happened, let me tell you something,’” she said. “It’s kind of cliché and definitely how everyone puts it but I really do appreciate movies that ask you questions instead of telling you things.”
Portraying such an icon on the big screen is always a daunting challenge. But for Kristen, stepping on the shoes of the late Princess has been such an inspiring process.
“I think she provides this incredibly lush and complicated terrain to make art about,” the actress said. “She’s somebody who is so inspiring and like to change the world.”
Directed by Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín, “Spencer” tells of the late princess’ 1991 stay at Sandringham Estate during Christmas, before she decided to break up with Prince Charles for good. It was first released in local cinemas last November.
