The resumption of limited face-to-face classes in select public and private schools in the National Capital Region (NCR) was “generally smooth,” an official of the Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday, Feb. 9 said.

“Overall assessment was smooth and learners are excited to go back to schools,” DepEd Human Resource and Organizational Development Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Wilfredo Cabral told the Manila Bulletin.

Cabral, who also serves as the Regional Director of DepEd-NCR, said that 39 schools resumed face-to-face classes on Wednesday wherein “the 28 are the original pilot” schools.

Citing updates from Navotas, Cabral said that the resumption of face-to-face classes was “generally smooth” because all the participating schools were granted Safety Seals by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Cabral said that “perfect attendance was noted” in the schools that resumed limited face-to-face classes.

He also cited the “overwhelming support from stakeholders” including the teachers and personnel of participating schools, parents, learners, LGUs --- among others.

Cabral said that DepEd will also “provide updates from the rest once available.”

DepEd also gave updates on the first day of expanded face-to-face classes in some Metro Manila schools as posted on its Facebook page.

Among the schools that implemented the expansion phase of limited face-to-face classes was Ignacio B. Villamor Senior High School (IBVSHS) in Sta. Ana, Manila which was participated in by Grade 12 Technical-Vocational Livelihood (TVL) - Information Communication and Technology students.

All students and teachers who joined the limited face-to-face classes were fully vaccinated against coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The learners were given consent by their parents to participate in the in-person classes.

Meanwhile, IBVSHS also ensured the strict implementation of safety protocols for the protection of those who are joining the face-to-face classes.

“Overall, the expanded face-to-face class (hybrid set-up) at our school was smooth and successful,” IBVSHS teacher Aljohn Cueva said in a mix of English and Filipino.

Cueva added that innovation in the education system like the hybrid setup will also help address some of the problems in other types of learning modalities like online and modular.

The resumption of face-to-face classes, Cueva said, is also expected to help the student’s learning process.

“Higit na nagkakaroon ng pagkakataon ang mga mag-aaral na praktikal at personal na matutuhan ang mga kaalaman at kasanayan na kanilang kinakailangan sakaling magtuloy man sila sa kolehiyo o naisin na nila magtrabaho sa hinaharap (Students will have more opportunities to practice and personally learn the knowledge and skills they need in case they go to college or want to work in the future),” he added.
