To ease the anxiety of both children and parents

The COVID-19 vaccines allocated for children between five to 11 years old have been delayed for a few days, but it’s finally here. A lot of firsts happened yesterday, Feb. 7, as the first batch of registered children from this age group trooped to SM Supermalls to get their immunization. NCR, Region III, and Region IV-A were the first to proceed with the Resbakuna Kids.

SM Supermalls is the first and only mall site to administer the vaccine, collaborating with the Department of Health (DOH), Inter-Agency Task Force and National Task Force Against COVID, National Vaccination Operation Center, and the local government units in making sure that the children have a positive and safe experience while getting their shots.

SM City North EDSA in partnership with Quezon city LGU and Department of Health and Organization launches Resbakuna Kids at The Skydome

“We have vaccination sites at 11 select SM malls like The Podium, North EDSA, Mall of Asia Music Hall, SM Aura Taguig, Olongapo, Sucat, Las Piñas, Grand Central, Lemery, Dasmarinas, and Mindpro. Our kids are among the most vulnerable to COVID-19 and we believe it is the right time to give them the necessary protection against it, which is why we are doing a grand launch for pediatric vaccination at SM Megamall today, Feb. 8, in partnership with the national government, Mandaluyong LGU, and our friends from the private sector,” says SM Supermalls president Steven Tan.

In SM North EDSA Sky Dome, the launch was attended by SVP for operations of SM Supermalls Bien Mateo, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, Officer In Charge of the WHO country office Dr. Achyut Shresthe, Chief Implementer Sec. Carlito Garlvez, National Task Force against Covid 19 Response Sec. Vince Dizon who is also the Testing Czar and presidential Advisor for Covid 19 Response, DOH Dr. Ted Herbosa and Dr. Aleli Annie Grace P. Sudiacal. Managing Director for McDonald's Philippines Margot Torres was also present. Dr. Karen See and Dr. Amelia Medina of DOH did the ceremonial vaccination and the children were welcomed by colorful mascots to ease the kids' anxiety with regards to getting vaccinated.

It was in December 2021 when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave an emergency use authorization (EUA) for Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine to be administered to children between five to 11 years old. The national government aims to vaccinate at least 60 percent of the projected population of over 15 million kids within that age group in a period of one month.

“We want to make vaccination a fun and safe experience for our SuperKids, so we partnered with our mall tenants to create that atmosphere for them. We’ve installed kid-friendly waiting areas where they can stay before and after getting vaccinated. We have mascots, balloons, and magic shows to entertain and make them feel comfortable. They can vax, shop, and dine and take advantage of special offers at SM Supermalls,” shares SM Supermalls SVP for Operations Bien Mateo.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to pre-register their children in their respective LGUs for Resbakuna Kids. Valid ID cards, birth certificate, and other documents with photos of their children are needed to avail of the vaccine. Consent forms, assent forms, and health declaration forms are available on site. For children with health risks, parents are asked to seek clearance from the doctors before getting vaccinated.

“We want to encourage parents and guardians to get COVID-19 immunization for their kids here at SM. This is our best option to ensure their safety and protection once they go outside the safe confines of our homes, either to go to school or to go back to the activities we enjoyed as families like malling. We are looking forward to opening more pediatric vaccination sites for our SuperKids in the coming months,” adds Tan.
