Public urged to report election violations

The public may now report any election violations to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said the public may report via email or Twitter.

"We are now able to receive reports of wrongdoings through our [email protected]. That is the email that we are asking everyone to use in order to report incidents of election violations," he said in an online briefing Tuesday, Feb. 8.

"On Twitter, we are asking everyone to use the #SumbongKo. This will allow us to identify from among the mass of tweets potential violations of election laws," added Jimenez.

He said reports received will be referred to appropriate authorities who have the closest possible connection to the offense.

"Example, in city of Manila, then the complaint will be referred to the election officer of Manila. They are the closest officials there and in the best position to take action," said Jimenez.

"Please remember that idea is to refer the complaints for appropriate action. We must always understand that action to the complaints are subject to requirements of due process," he added.

Meanwhile, the Comelec did not receive any untoward report on the first day of the campaign period for national candidates in the May 2022 polls.

But Jimenez said there have been reports of some potential violations of certain election norms and practices such as the participants not wearing face shields and not observing physical distancing.

On Tuesday, the Comelec also started their e-rally which featured a number of candidates.

The first night of the e-rally featured Manny Pacquiao, Norberto Gonzales, and Mangondato Faisal who shared their plans for the country if elected as president.

The Campaign S.A.F.E. Comelec e-rally channel on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/COMELECeRallyChannel) will provide e-rally airtime to all bona fide candidates for the positions of President, Vice-President and Senator, as well as to each participating Party-List organization.

The Comelec said the e-rally will be a regular channel for bets to reach out to voters.
