Face shields mandatory in campaign events—Comelec

Wearing face shield is a must in campaign events as the Commission on Elections (Comelec) deems it “a crucial cornerstone of minimum health protocols.”

During a press briefing on Tuesday, Feb. 8, Comelec Spokesperson James B. Jimenez maintained that the use of face shield as mandatory in campaign events.

“The guidance is still, use face masks and face shields, especially for high-risk environments, such as campaigns,” he said.

In rationalizing this, the poll body spokesperson said: “As far as the use of face shields is concerned, we feel that it's necessary to point out that even under IATF guidelines, face shields are still there only of course, voluntary.”

“The Comelec has made the determination that campaigns are well not ordinary places. And as far as the Comelec is concerned, mandating the use of face shields is justified,” he stressed.

Jimenez said that the safety of the public is their primordial concern that’s why they mandated the use of face shields.

Due to the threat of COVID-19, protective gears such as face shields and face masks are being used in the country in a bid to stem the transmission of the virus.

The campaign period officialy started on Tuesday, Feb. 8, with various groups and candidates holding rallies and motorcades with their supporters.
