The English term for the famed Filipino root crop "kamote" should be sweetpotato, and not sweet potato, according to the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources and Development (DOST-PCAARD).
"This popular Pinoy crop has been one of DOST-PCAARD's research and development staples," DOST-PCAARD wrote on its Facebook page.
The study results on sweetpotato were published in the PCAARD eLibrary which can be accessed by the public.
Meanwhile, according to International Potato Center (CIP), using the single-word term helps differentiate the sweetpotato from the white or Irish potato, which is a tuber and not a root.
"CIP since its inception has opted to use the one-word term for these nutrient-packed crops native to Peru and other parts of Central America," it added.
