As rivals launch campaign in Luzon, Pacquiao opts for Mindanao for his proclamation rally
GENERAL SANTOS CITY - The lone presidential bet to launch his candidacy in Mindanao on Tuesday, Feb. 8 reiterated his vow to push for the welfare of the poor in all corners of the country by ridding the bureaucracy of grafters and corrupt officials and personnel.
PROMDI Party presidential candidate Sen. Manny Pacquiao led a motorcade from Barangay Bawing, at the boundary of Saranggani and South Cotabato, towards key areas in Gen. Santos City as the initial campaign activity of the Pacquiao camp.
He completed the event at the massive Oval Plaza Grandstand where a huge crowd of supporters were waiting.
Pacquiao is the only presidential candidate to launch his bid in Mindanao, all of his rivals held their proclamation rallies in various parts of Luzon.
The senator explained that he is the only presidential candidate to come from Mindanao, adding that he also speaks fluent Visayan and Ilonggo dialects.
“I launched my candidacy in Mindanao not only because it is the land of my birth, I was born in Bukidnon and grew up in Saranggani and GenSan. I believe Mindanao and the Visayas must get much needed support from the government,” he told reporters in Filipino during an interview.
The country’s boxing icon stressed, however, that poor Filipinos in Luzon, aside from those in Visayas and Mindanao, should expect to be included in his anti-poverty priority programs.
Supporters came all the way from Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte; Maguindanao, Saranggani, Bukidnon and other Mindanao provinces to witness the proclamation rally of the Pacquiao-Atienza team.
Deputy Speaker and Buhay Partylist Rep. Lito Atienza, Pacquiao’s runningmate, did not make it to the event after accidentally spraining his foot.
However, senatorial candidates Raffy Tulfo and former Eastern Samar Gov. Lutgardo Barbo were expected to join the PROMDI standard bearer at the proclamation rally in the evening.
Actress Bianca Manalo gave word that she will represent fiancee, re-electionist Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian in the campaign kick off ceremony.
Aside from Tulfo, Barbo and Gatchalian, Team Pacquiao-Atienza also adopted as part of their senatorial lineup Senator Richard Gordon and Joel Villanueva, , Deputy Speaker and Antique Rep. Loren Legarda, former Vice President Jejomar Binay and former Sen. JV Ejercito.
Former Bayan Muna Rep. Nery Colmenares dropped out from the adopted senatorial candidates to join the camp of Vice President Leni Robredo.
Those who were unable to show up advised the Pacquiao-Atienza camp that they will be sending video messages for the rally.
As of 5 pm on Tuesday, a crowd of at least three to four thousand waited for the proclamation of the candidacy of the Pacquiao-Atienza team.
