PH Red Cross brings 'Bakuna' bus; 'Hot Meals on Wheels' to Malabon

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Malabon Chapter drove its Hot Meals on Wheels food truck to a barangay in Malabon City to provide children, and the elderly with warm, nutritious meals.

A team of volunteers provided hot meals to residents in N. Vicencio St. in Barangay Niugan, Malabon City, the organization said.

PRC said that a United Nations report mentioned that 59 million Filipinos experienced food insecurity even before the pandemic. Over the past two years, the pandemic exacerbated the hunger crisis as the virus has seriously affected the agriculture sector.

"With challenges to malnutrition, hunger, and food insecurity experienced by children and the elderly due to the pandemic, it is important that we continue to boost our efforts to address all the health and nutrition needs of the people," PRC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Sen. Richard Gordon said in a statement.

PRC Malabon Chapter provided meals which included chicken, eggs, and rice to 150 beneficiaries. PRC has 23 food trucks for the specific program equipped with kitchens that can prepare 100 meals per hour or 800 meals in an 8-hour operation. As of Feb. 3, the humanitarian organization has served meals for 114,463 individuals since the beginning of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Gordon also deployed the Bakuna Bus for the first time in Malabon to vaccinate 300 individuals, PRC said on Monday, Feb. 7.

According to Gordon, the deployment of the Bakuna Bus was done to intensify PRC’s fight against COVID-19. PRC currently has 17 Bakuna buses and 26 Bakuna centers and has administered 979,304 doses.

“We need to act fast in vaccinating the unvaccinated individuals to protect them from COVID-19. I encourage everyone to get vaccinated. Ipinapadala natin ang ating mga Bakuna Bus upang mabigyan ng access ang mga tao sa bakuna,” Gordon said.

He also encouraged the public to get tested to detect the virus and prevent household transmission.

"PRC continues its fight against COVID-19 through the continuous deployment of the Bakuna Bus and Bakuna Centers and the continuous operation of the molecular laboratories and isolation facilities," the agency said.
