DepEd / MANILA BULLETIN

Classes in public schools resumed on Monday, Feb. 7 after the mid-year break according to the Department of Education (DepEd).

Based on the School Year (SY) 2021-2022 Calendar, the mid-year break for students in public schools nationwide was scheduled from Feb. 2 to 5.

The resumption of classes after the mid-year break, DepEd said, will also mark the start of Academic Quarter 3 beginning Feb. 7.

Before the mid-year break, DepEd also allowed the suspension of classes and teaching-related activities amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) surge following the calls from various teachers groups to implement academic and health breaks.

Undersecretary Curriculum and Instruction Strand Diosdado San Antonio, in a memorandum issued on Jan. 12, instructed local DepEd officials to “exercise discretion” in suspending classes and other teaching-related activities.

This move, San Antonio said, is in consideration of teachers’ and learners’ health and well-being” as the country experiences an “alarming surge” in COVID-19 cases.

The regional and schools division offices of DepEd in the affected areas were given the option to declare the suspension of classes within January 2022 based on their reliable assessment of the health status of their teachers and learners and the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) risk classification.

The period of class suspension, San Antonio said, should not exceed two weeks to “avoid a prolonged disruption in the current school calendar.”

Among the regions that declared class suspensions include the DepEd-National Capital Region (NCR) and DepEd-Calabarzon (Region IV-A).

In Metro Manila, classes in public schools were suspended from Jan. 15 to 22 to “ease the health burden caused by the surge of COVID-19 cases to the physical and mental well-being of the school personnel and learners.”

Classes in NCR public schools were expected to resume on Jan. 24 to 29 on “purely asynchronous learning modalities.” Teachers were also not required to physically report to their respective schools.

During the mid-year break scheduled on Jan. 31 to Feb. 5, DepEd-NCR directed the schools to utilize this period to allow the learners to comply with backlogs in learning outputs.

Teachers were also expected to attend to their usual activities --- including in-service training and other learning-related undertakings.

The lost contact days, DepEd said, shall be compensated by mechanisms such as independent study, remediation, enhancement activities, and other related teaching-learning interactions.

DepEd-Calabarzon, on the other hand, declared the suspension of classes in all grades levels in public schools from Jan. 17 to 29.

During this period, all other school activities, whether physical or virtual (online), that involve school-based personnel, learners, and parents were suspended.
