House Deputy Speaker and Antique Rep. Loren Legarda says that she will push for the recovery of less developed communities in Cebu after the damage wrought by the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) and the recent supertyphoon “Odette”.

“Alam natin kung gaano ka-importante ang ating mga mangingisda (We know how valuable Filipino fishermen are), not only for our economic growth but also for our food security," Legarda said during the League of Municipalities of the Philippines Cebu Chapter (LMP-Cebu) General Assembly on Saturday, Feb. 26.
“We need to continuously support them. We also need to capacitate them, especially on how to prepare before, as well as respond during and after natural disasters,” she continued, referring specifically to the effects of Odette.
Supertyphoon Odette which made landfall in December 2021 wrought major damage to large sections of Visayas, Mindanao, and Southern Luzon, including Liloan Municipality in Cebu.
Legarda previously visited Liloan to convene with Mayor Christina Frasco and to donate fishing gear, housing financial aid, and construction materials to residents of the area.
During the LMP-Cebu assembly, Legarda mentioned that she would push for legislation targeting the redevelopment of tourism, education, and employment sectors in the region.
She also said that she would seek better funding in government agencies catering to farmers and fisherfolk.
"If re-elected, I will seek measures for bigger budget allocations to relevant programs under the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and the Department of Trade and Industry,” she added.
Legarda is running for a senatorial seat under the UniTeam led by presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. and running mate Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
