The return of Chot Reyes as coach of Gilas Pilipinas has also allowed him to reunite with players from his shortlived 23 for 23 program during his previous stint with the national team.
Gilas players Robert Bolick, Thirdy Ravena, Dwight Ramos and Juan Gomez de Liano were part of the long-term goal of preparing 23 players who are either in high school or college for the country’s hosting of the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
Reyes formed the program for 2023, with the pool even competing against collegiate teams, with the four players along with a few notables like Kai Sotto, CJ Perez, AJ Edu and even US NCAA cager Remy Martin.
But the 23 for 23 quietly ceased in the aftermath of Reyes stepping down from the Gilas post in the aftermath of the infamous brawl with Australia.
“Who would have imagined one month ago that the combination of players is going to be in that dugout today. I mean, absolutely no idea,” Reyes said. “A lot of us had absolutely no idea we're going to find ourselves in this position.”
Re-hired to call the shots earlier this month, Reyes was able to get Gomez de Liano, currently unattached after being released by Earthfriends Tokyo Z of Japan’s B.League second division.
Ramos took a break from his B.League duty with the Toyama Grouses, so is Ravena of the San-En Neophoenix and were able to fly to Manila to join the Gilas training sessions as a FIBA clauses in their contract allowed them to suit up for FIBA tourneys.
Bolick had sent feelers to Reyes to possibly join Gilas while in the midst of contract negotiations with NorthPort. The PBA rising star eventually got his new deal and at the same time received a go-signal from the Batang Pier to play in the qualifiers.
Ramos and Ravena scored 17 and 15 for Gilas when it clobbered India, 88-64, Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum while Bolick was also in double figures with 10, including two triples.
Gomez de Liano played just 10 minutes and registered three points, four rebounds and three assists.
“I’m very happy that those things happened,” Reyes said, “In fact, when Robert Bolick called me to tell me that he is ready to play for this team, he said, ‘I want to play for this team, coach, because I was in the original 23 for 23 lineup.’
“It’s so funny how things turned out,” he added.
