Senatorial candidate and former congressman Monsour Del Rosario on Friday said all Filipinos should relive the true “spirit of EDSA,” a historic event that reshaped the nation, in the comfort of their homes and community.

Though it has been almost four decades since the Philippines have shown to the world that it can turn down anyone who tramples ones dignity and freedom through the EDSA People Power revolution, it should remain as something that Filipinos should be proud of, the ex-lawmaker said.

“It has been almost four decades since we showed the world that we can turn down anyone who tramples on our dignity and freedom. I was young in 1986, but it stuck in my mind that being Filipino is something we should be proud of,” said Del Rosario, who is running for the Senate in the May 2022 elections.

Del Rosario is part of the senatorial slate of Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson and Senate President Vicente Sotto III’s tandem.

“I brought that to sports when I competed in international competitions for Taekwondo where we waved the country's flag at the Olympics. I also brought it with me when I started serving as a Councilor and Congressman in the city of Makati,” added Del Rosario, who became known in the martial arts world as a member of the Philippine National Taekwondo Team from 1982 to 1989.

“Especially at this time, let us not forget that the spirit of EDSA is not only seen in street protests. We can demonstrate this in our homes, in our work, in our communities—standing tall and invincible in the face of corruption, bribery and social injustice. This is the true spirit of People Power,” he pointed out.

Through the EDSA People Power, Del Rosario said the whole witness the Philippines’ victorious feat in ousting a dictator through peaceful protest.

“Around the world, we’ve seen the many blows to democracy as a result of corrupt officials, pandemics, and war, but Filipinos know that the unity of every citizen is the key to overcoming all that!

“May we solemnly commemorate the 36th anniversary of EDSA PEOPLE POWER! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!" he reiterated.

A former member of the House of Representatives, Del Rosario also once served as city councilor in the 1st District of Makati from 2010 to 2016, and later as congressman in the 17th Congress, representing the same district from 2016 to 2019.

If elected as a senator, Del Rosario said he will push for the provision of a competent pension for athletes, the Healthcare Heroes Card for health and medical frontliners, and the provision of proper education and support to children with different learning abilities.
