Robredo on 36th EDSA People Power anniversary: 'Filipinos stood together to fight for freedom'
Vice President Leni Robredo said it was the Filipinos' love for the country that gave them the courage to fight for their freedom and made the 1986 People Power Revolution successful.

Robredo made the statement Friday, Feb. 25, as the country commemorates the 36th anniversary of the People Power Revolution that toppled the 20-year dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and restored the country's democracy.
According to Robredo, the very essence of the People Power goes beyond any name or surnames as it was a story of Filipinos standing up together to fight for freedom.
"Kuwento ito ng pagkakaisa... Kuwento ito ng pagmamahal... Puso at pagmamahal ang nagdala ng tagumpay ng bayan sa EDSA (This is a story of solidarity and of love. The Filipinos' heart and love made EDSA People Power successful)," Robredo said.
"At tuwing isinasabuhay natin ang pagmamahal na ito–People Power man o People’s Campaign, sa mapayapang rebolusyon man o napakahalagang halalan–kaisa natin ang lahat ng henerasyong nauna at susunod pa sa pagtindig, pagkakapit-bisig, at pagbubukas ng loob sa kapwa, sa ngalan ng isang maunlad, mapagpalaya, at makataong bukas (Every time we put into practice this kind of love–whether through People Power or a People’s Campaign, through a peaceful revolution or a very important election–we are one with all generations by standing up, arm-in-arm, and openness to others, in the name of a prosperous, liberating, and humane future)," she added.
According to Robredo, more than three decades have passed since this bloodless revolution but the spirit of the People Power lives on up to this day.
"Mapalad tayong makita ito sa mga nagpapakain ng kapwa, sa mga nag-aabot ng makakaya para tumulong sa nasalanta, at sa mga nagtataya ng pagod at oras para sa isang gobyernong tapat, na magdadala ng lipunan kung saan aangat ang buhay ng lahat— lahat nabibigyang-lingap, lahat nabibigyang-lakas, lahat napupuntahan nang agaran dahil may pamahalaang itinuturing na sentro ang laylayan (We are lucky to see this in people who feed those in need, those who lend a helping hand to victims of disasters, those who ensure a trustworthy government, those who lifted everyone—they were all provided with care and strength and everyone is immediately assisted as the government is focusing on them)," she said.
