Iloilo church bells ring to mark 36th EDSA People Power anniversary

ILOILO CITY—Bells of Roman Catholic churches in the province of Iloilo are set to ring Friday night to mark the 36th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.

Archbishop Jose Romeo Lazo of the Archdiocese of Jaro encouraged all the churches in the 42 towns, component city of Passi, and even in Iloilo City to simultaneous ring their bells at around 9:25 p.m., which was the time former President Ferdinand Marcos, his family, and his allies fled Malacañang on Feb. 25, 1986 and paved the way for the restoration of democracy in the country.

“May this commemoration revive the spirit of this historic event which is a truthful witness of the nation's struggle and victory for truth, freedom, and democracy,” said Lazo in a statement.

The Archdiocese of Jaro was where the late Jaime Cardinal Sin served as archbishop before he was transferred to Manila and played a pivotal role in the 1986 bloodless revolution.

The Archdiocese of Jaro heeded the call of Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., who is leading a Freedom Rally at the grounds of the Iloilo Provincial Capitol also on Friday There will be a noise barrage, fireworks, and a caravan.
