Duterte honors Filipinos 'who keep democracy alive' on EDSA 36th year observance

As the country commemorates the 36th anniversary of the People Power Revolution, President Duterte called on Filipinos to honor the people who continue to keep the democracy alive.

In his People Power anniversary message on Friday, Feb. 25, Duterte said that memories of the bloodless mass protests in 1986 remain vivid in the memories of the Filipinos who fought to end the 21-year dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos and reclaimed the nation's democracy.

"This celebration serves as a strong reminder that with unity, cooperation and faith, there is nothing that we cannot collectively achieve for the greater good of our country," he said.

"As we honor the courage and solidarity of those who have come before us and fought to uphold our democracy, let us also honor and think those who continue to keep alive the legacy of this largely peaceful and non-violent revolution," Duterte added.

According to Duterte, those who embody the true essence of People Power in our daily lives are honest and effective public servants, those who conduct rescue and relief operations during calamities, community volunteers, as well as frontliners in the ongoing pandemic.

"Let us emulate their heroism, selflessness and compassion as we strive to recover from our present challenges and march forward to a better Philippines for all," the President said.

No less than the President's mother, Soledad Duterte, known as "Nanay Soling," led the the "Yellow Friday Movement" in Davao City, one of the popular demonstrations that sparked the People Power Revolution in EDSA.
