Advincula: EDSA is a religious, spiritual experience that cuts through time

During the 36th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal F. Advincula presided over the celebration of the holy eucharist and said that the EDSA People Power is not just a political event, but a “religious and spiritual experience” that cuts through time.

“On this day 36 years ago, Mama Mary gathered us, her beloved Filipino children, to EDSA in order to rally and pray together for the sake of truth, justice, and peace in our troubled land,” Advincula said in his homily.

EDSA, according to Advincula, is a “victory of faith” and heroism of the Filipino people.

“EDSA is not just a political event about the reconfiguration of power. EDSA is a religious and spiritual experience that cuts through time,” he said.

He added that the event showed the world that Filipinos are not passive and blind followers of "greedy power players," but it revealed that Filipinos are actively-engaged citizens who have the freedom and dignity to choose the nation’s destiny by coming together in prayer and solidarity.

Meanwhile, he urged the public to let the spirit of EDSA “live on.”

“Let us transcend our selfish preferences and personal conveniences for the sake of the common good. Let us be agents and instruments of truth, charity, and righteousness in our beloved Philippines,” Advincula said.

The celebration of the holy eucharist was held at the Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace, also known as the EDSA shrine at 12:15 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25.
