When there’s nothing new, yet things are neither normal nor abnormal, what do you call it?
Unusual times call for unusual deeds and styles.
Look at the way the election campaign is going. The President’s administration party has been so shamefacedly misadministered that it doesn’t have its own ticket just as a multitude of parties have sprouted everywhere, as many of them as there are candidates.
Neither DU30 nor his Energy secretary, who’s the party chieftain, has the energy to declare what’s up (or off). Though it certainly looks like they’re about to preside over the formal, final breakup of the party.
The explosion of parties, several of which were only recently brought back to a second life, is not an indication of the strength of the party system but rather “a sign of the weakness of the multiparty system,” to quote a commentator.
This weakness is also reflected in the proliferation of senatorial candidates who “belong” to more than one ticket. What a spectacle, to see one candidate taking part in two (or more) campaign events under different banners and standard-bearers. It got to be so confusing that presidential aspirant Ping Lacson and his teammate, Tito Sotto, had to step in to strip a senator and an ex-mayor of their slots. Not a fine example of loyalty and good manners, more like sharing a mistress.
On the campaign trail, KPE, aka Katrina Ponce Enrile, took the road less traveled by declaring her support for BBM-Sara “all the way and without limits or reservations,” including dipping into her personal funds. What a ground-breaking statement, coming from a private citizen! As a businesswoman with investments in diverse industries, KPE made it clear that she knows the value of keeping her private life safely apart from the world she’ll soon be joining, when she wins a seat in Congress to represent Cagayan’s first district.
Who is KPE? She’s the lady who so loves black that there’s no other color in her wardrobe. As the only daughter of her father, she has a sense of humor even when it’s used against JPE. Like calling him a dinosaur, never mind that he plays games on his smartphone, or giving away his beauty secret of tinting his hair at age 98.
